I think the question was pretty basic without the need of additional context: what is the exact meaning of status "unknown". There's always an "offline" status which applies in situations where contact is not logged in, so in what situations "unknown" could make any sense? BTW I'm currently facing the exact same issue where many but not all of my contacts are flagged as "unknown" happens simultaneously in Skype Entreprise too and I'd really like to know what is causing this.

Please re-confirm whether the contacts whose status are "unknown" have been out of use. I mean, they do not use the service or they have changed to be another address. For example, for your contact named "A", his original address is "user contoso. As a result, A will be shown as "unknown" as you are still having his address with "user contoso.
